Seborrheic keratosis is a benign epithelial formation of unknown etiology. It is usually characterized by age-related lesions occurring after 30 years of age and increasing on the number of brown-adherent lesions on the skin. Although the majority of seborrheic keratosis lesions are asymptomatic, they are quite uncomfortable for cosmetic reasons. Because of the lack of potential for malignancy and mostly asymptomatic, the lesions can be left alone. Treatment, however, has priority if it is accompanied by itching, bleeding or inflammation.
Cryotherapy, curettage, electrocautery or their combination has been used in the treatment of seborrheic keratosis for many years. While cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen is accepted as the standard treatment for seborrheic keratosis, hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation occur quite frequently in the field of treatment. With the developing technology, Erbium: YAG lasers have been used successfully in the treatment of many cutaneous lesions including seborrheic keratosis.
